''Christopher Peacocke's wealthy, densely argued ebook is a frontal attack at the job of creating a conception of strategies. Its argument is a version of rigor: every one movement is strictly flagged, each one declare exceedingly articulated. . . . it's a mark of the simplest paintings in philosophy that it bargains with deep and valuable matters whereas while attaining past itself to fructify debate in other places. Peacocke's stimulating e-book does either this stuff, and in ways in which no destiny account of its material can ignore.'' -- A. C. Grayling, instances larger schooling complement

For example, it is familiar when the hand grasps a stone and makes it a tool, yet it remains terra incognita in that, despite a long genealogy of analytic efforts, just what this grasping implies for humans remains elusive and refuses to be reduced and read in the form of a linear evolutionary narrative. There are many reasons why this blind spot exists. I have already pointed out some of them, and I shall point to others in the chapters that follow. But there is one general point that nicely encapsulates them all.
Turing’s algorithms and Chomskian grammars, however effective in mapping off-line analytical procedures of disembodied intellects, scored very low on cognitive tasks that involved embodied on-line engaging with the material world in real-life settings. From the perspective of archaeology, I believe, it makes good sense to assume that the ancient mind whose operations we want to pursue and reconstruct in and through the material remains of the past is of the latter kind. It is a mind absorbed in, rather than detached from, the world, and principally preoccupied with doing “what computers can’t do” (Dreyfus 1979).
From a non-anthropocentric perspective, I discuss methodological fetishism as a conceptual apparatus for studying the agency of things. I conclude the chapter by advancing the argument for material agency. My argument is that in the human engagement with the material world there are no fixed attributes of agent entities and patient entities and no clean ontological separations between them; rather, there is a constitutive intertwining between intentionality and affordance. Agency and intentionality may not be properties of things; they are not properties of humans either; they are the properties of material engagement.
