Like a shattered piece from a hologram or a single human blood cell, we know that the parts are contained in the whole and the whole is contained in the parts (Wilber, 1985). Each contains the ingredients of the other.

To do this, they had to construct a new way of knowing, a new way of thinking. That is, they had to conjure up the courage to say to the high prophets of the temple that superstition no longer worked in explaining the world. There had to be a better way—a more knowing way. So these ancient Greeks fiddled around with the shape of things. They theorized that within water there were these globular atoms that slipped and slapped over and under each other, making water slippery. That’s why it’s hard to hold water in our hands.

But she felt disturbed each time she used that wrench. She must have innately known that nothing that she was doing made sense to her feelings about democracy. In a democratic organization, aren’t the lines of communication open? Aren’t decisions based on cooperative interaction, not somebody ordering you about? Couldn’t many minds working together make better decisions than one mind working alone, especially if all those minds had similar goals for their students? When she first entered the principal’s office, she discovered that it didn’t work that way.
